National recording artist Christine Storm has performed throughout the world, has been a prolific songwriter, and continues to tap into her wide range of life experiences for her music. Christine’s influences range from Alice Cooper to Blood, Sweat, and Tears, all the way across the spectrum to Kate Bush and Prince. Her sound has been described as an eclectic blend of Soul and Techno dance with melodies that are Pop driven. Many of her songs tell a story and confront real life feelings and attitudes, but with a humorous touch in many cases.
“I would describe myself as sarcastic and eclectic! I love the escapism of music and how it can change the mood of a person, but at the same time, be so damn fun,” states Christine.
No stranger to the stage, Christine has performed throughout North America, Europe, and the Mediterranean region. Regardless of the culture her audience represents, the passion and wit she brings to her show engages them with ease. An escape for many, Christine’s seasoned vocals and playful personality have the power to change the mood in a room within seconds.
In front and behind the camera, Christine actively holds the creative reigns, steering a wide range of feelings, characters, and storylines directly from her music to the screen. Whether her audience is listening in the car, watching a music video, or seeing her live show, what drives Christine’s creative process is her goal for everyone to move, have some fun, and even think a little. These take-away moments have fueled word-of-mouth buzz for Christine that lead to performances at various charity and private events where industry players such as breakthrough pioneer artist Malina Moye, and Rock & Roll icon Mike Love, have become fans.
Interview by Tim Brown
When and why did you start singing? I was always writing poetry as a kid. Later on, songs started coming to me and I had to sing them to musicians to see if they were any good and see if they might want to use them. The musicians kept telling me, I should sing them. Then they started getting me on stage with them. One day, it was the only job I could get and I was hooked! I’m having a great career!
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? I admire an array of musicians and singers. Blood Sweat and Tears was amazing. Alice Cooper for being so brilliant and outside the box. Johnny Cash, what an incredible song writer. I wept when Prince left us and he was my favorite, I had fantasies of co-writing with him. Kate Bush made me fascinated with singing and Dolly Parton is an amazing writer and business women. Tom Petty, period. They all influenced me, I guess I’m pretty old school.
Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
Kate Bush’s cassette, “the whole story”. Jefferson Airplane “Red Octopus” album. Rod Stewart’s “A Night on the town”. Prince’s “Purple Rain”, Foreigner’s “Double Vision” , Supertramp’s “Breakfast In America”, Earth Wind and Fire’s album, “I Am”.
Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV I do and have in much of America and internationally. I was the first singer to perform on the runway at “The Delhi Times Fashion Week” last year: It was an amazing experience and was well received. I feel most at home on stage!
What makes this kind of music “good” to you? Being a writer, I like good lyrics, good hooks with a bit of sarcasm or irony. I feel my lyrics come to me that way as well so I can identify. I love a plethora of styles of beats and melodies but it is cool to experience someone making you move and think at the same time! I’m always excited when one of my songs comes out like that: especially when I’m not beating anyone over the head with a message.
How do you feel about the internet in the music business? it’s a mixed bag! I address cyber bullying in my music video “Raining Frogs” because the internet can pump you up or tear you down. On one hand we have access to incredible music that hasn’t hit the main stream: on the other hand, young artists get exposed to everyone’s opinion! I’m of the opinion that you can turn it up or turn it off and leave it at that but no matter what, artists need to have conviction in what they are doing!
What are the plans for the future? I want to find the right tour! I love performing! I just went to a Gladys Knight concert and left so inspired, I can’t wait to get out there! I am also progressing our “Jam for Joy” venture and clothing line but since I’ve been bullied in the music business and never gave up; I want to continue to help young artists and entrepreneurs reach their dreams through “The Christine Storm Experience”!
How has your music evolved since you first began performing? What a great question! Since I have performed in almost every genre of band and impersonation show there is, I feel I picked up a lot along the way! The biggest evolution has been finding my own voices in all of it! I say voices because I don’t have one style! Someone recently told me that my style was like Reno weather. If you don’t like it, wait three minutes it will be completely different! This is why I’m so excited for my tour! I think there is something for everyone! I don’t force my writing, it just comes to me like a present! Its exciting though to sometimes hear sophistication in the simplest melodies and visa versa!
Could you briefly describe the music-making process? My Process is leave it alone! Don’t force it and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! I recently did that with my new release “Pain”. It was a quick write, I left it alone! An idea will come to me and I’ll record it on my phone or jot it down, then I wait and see. “Numb” started about 7 years ago! The rest of it poured out after watching the news one day. “Present” came in 7 minutes pulling into a shopping center parking lot where I couldn’t type fast enough! I then take the melody and lyrics to a song writing partner, usually Jerry Spikula from Abbey West Recording here in Reno (who I have written 70 songs with) and we hash out the style and music. We then put down a dummy track for reference to start building the song and sometimes the first take is it! I’m of the belief that brilliance is in imperfection where the character lives! If Janis Joplin sang in the center of the pitch no one would have ever heard of her! I’m not saying, “throw pitch to the wind” but don’t sterilize the character out of it either! We then often bring in musicians that we know can nail the nuances we’re looking for like a military drummer for a marching drum pattern or the right cellist! I just put down a cool industrial beat using a round cake pan taped to a metal music stand and hitting it with a big metal shaker and a tambourine: we just don’t stop till we get the point across!
Tell me more about “The Christine Storm Experience”. This is so exciting! The Christine Storm Experience, is the best deal out there! It makes dreams accessible! I have partnered with “Hush Media Networks” to create this experience for artists and entrepreneurs so they can have their dreams heard! For $40.00 they can have a one year AirPlay campaign of either radio spins for their music or advertisement for their business: And they get a digital download of my self titled CD! They can find it at Christinestorm.com, Enter the world of Christine Storm or click on music , and it comes up!
Tell me more about the song “Present” distributed by Amada Records. First of all I am so grateful to Amada Records and DJ Choice for believing in the song “Present”! It is my 7 minute gift! It’s a surprising song! At first you hear this upbeat, fun, cool reggae beat with pretty simple guitar. Then you start listening to the lyrics and you can’t help but think, “Is she talking to me”? It’s a think piece with a cool beat and vibe that carries you to a positive, spiritual, universal message and leaves you feeling great! I can’t wait till you all see the music video I did with Duke Shoman out of LA as well, very quirky, very fun! This song is a Present to me that I re-gift to all of you! I hope you enjoy!
